The Art

ancmugs1

At that age, and for years afterward, I thought I was going to be a fine artist, creating art like I saw in museums and my "Famous Paintings" book. The private lessons I took in drawing and painting, the extra periods I spent in art class in high school all led me, and most of the folks who knew me, to assume I was a fine artist. We weren't paying attention to the posters, the publication covers, the yearbook work. I thought I loved "Famous Paintings" for the pictures.
It was my father who taught me to love art: painting, sculpture, music. He listened to the opera on Saturdays, played Beethoven and Mozart on the hi-fi. We were immersed in great music. He took me to special exhibits at the Baltimore Museum of Art. He took me downtown with him on Saturdays, when he went to his office, and taught me the best route to use walking to the Walter's Art Gallery. To this day it's still true that many of our visits with Father include a trip to the BMA or Walters.
