Learning to Learn

EotJ1

It was my mother who taught me to love learning, to be inquisitive. She read to all of us, constantly. I know she got heartily tired of reading "Duck and His Friends" out loud again and again, she's told me so with a laugh. But she never said no to a request for my favorite book.
She invented games for us to play. She invented "Human Beans," little beanbag people—she had me draw the design for them—cut them, sewed them up and sold them at church bazaars.
Whenever we asked the meaning of a new word read or heard in conversation, her inevitable reply was "Look it up." Our house had several big fat dictionaries.
And, although it took me a long time to appreciate it, my mother taught me a great love of order. She had a system for everything, and loved teaching us her Systems.
