When I was in high school, the hippies were big on moving back to the land, revering Native Americans and other indigenous peoples for their simple ways of life. Archaeology and anthropology are teaching us that those primitive ways of life, filled though they may have been with a deep spirituality, were also filled with hunger and rotten teeth, with infant mortality of fifty percent, with war and torture and human sacrifice and plenty of things that would have killed off the hippies in nothing flat! |
