We, in our privileged society, enjoy the fruits of knowledge that have transformed human life in ways faith and spirit never did. And now science is coming to a deeper understanding, putting knowledge from all kinds of disciplines together in mindboggling ways. Knowledge can lead to bombs and pollution and strip malls. The benefits of increased knowledge are often reserved for a privileged few. Many aspects of the harried privileged life are less pleasant than the old days of lazing on the veranda. The only way to overcome these limitations is to know more about what's good and bad, what's possible, what needs to be done and how to do it. Knowledge is the thing that makes us human, and perhaps one day, here in this world, divine. |
